Brain on Fire: Exploring the Role of Neuroinflammation in Psychiatric Symptoms Part II

CE Hours 1

About this course

This Continuing Education presentation investigates the link between neuroinflammation and common psychiatric symptoms. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, there is increased awareness among the medical community that viral (and other microbial) infections can both cause new psychiatric symptoms or exacerbate pre-existing conditions. This presentation will cover the underlying neuropsychoimmunologic mechanisms that have recently been identified in literature and the subsequent psychiatric manifestations that can follow. It will discuss clinical pearls as well as testing and treatment options that can assist with accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatments. There will be relevant case presentations throughout both parts of the lecture series that give pertinent examples of how to recognize these symptoms and apply novel integrative approaches to treatment. Additionally, there will be discussion of the necessary collaborative approach to helping this complex patient population.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify how pertinent anatomical structures, neuropsychoimmunologic mechanisms, and underlying psychiatric symptoms are affected by viral, fungal, and bacterial infections.
  • Describe the pathophysiologic mechanisms underlying psychiatric manifestations of neuroinflammation.
  • Predict when neuroinflammation is likely to be playing a causative role in psychiatric symptoms.
  • Identify common psychiatric manifestations associated with neuroinflammation and recognize risk factors for development of neuroinflammatory processes.
