Fundamentals of Somatic/Body-Based Therapy: Its Importance for Trauma and Attachment Wounds

CE Hours 1.5

About this course

This Continuing Education Unit (CEU) presentation offers an exploration of Somatic Therapy Practices designed to enhance therapeutic outcomes. The session will provide an overview of somatic (body-based) therapy, covering its core principles and scientific underpinnings. Emphasis will be placed on the effectiveness of this modality in addressing trauma and attachment-related wounds, highlighting its role in facilitating healing and recovery. The presentation will primarily focus on Somatic Experiencing, a biological approach to trauma resolution that works with the body’s responses. Key benefits of integrating somatic approaches will be discussed, including improved client support, a focus on resolving underlying issues rather than merely addressing symptoms, and practical tools for promoting Autonomic Nervous System regulation and healing attachment wounds.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify examples of Somatic Therapy.
  • Discuss the role of neuroception, Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) regulation (fight/flight/freeze), and Polyvagal Theory in client experiences, highlighting the scientific basis for somatic work.
  • Demonstrate how trauma and attachment issues are not solely rooted in conscious thought, memory, or behavior, but are instead embedded in the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), implicit memory, and neural wiring.
  • Explain how somatic therapy rewires the brain, transforms implicit memory, and addresses unconscious, harmful behaviors in clients.
  • Identify a key challenge therapists face when using talk therapy alone to treat trauma.
  • Provide strategies and a few simple somatic tools for immediate use.

Course Instructor(s)

  • Wanda L Brothers, MFT, SEP

Wanda Brothers founded her private practice, Real Life Solutions, 17 years ago with a passion for helping individuals heal, grow, and reach their full potential. She is dedicated to empowering clients and restoring peace to both their minds and bodies. As a Trauma and Attachment Expert, Wanda specializes in Somatic Body-Focused Therapy, using approaches such as Somatic Experiencing, EMDR, Touch Work, and DARe/Somatic Attachment Healing. These body-focused techniques often yield rapid progress by addressing the root causes of trauma directly.

Wanda’s expertise lies in healing trauma in both the mind and body. She frequently helps clients overcome debilitating anxiety, early childhood abuse and neglect, and somatization disorders—when emotional pain manifests physically, such as through chronic pain, headaches, IBS, and other ailments. In addition to her private practice, she supervises and trains therapists in the US and Internationally, providing valuable tools and information to address emotional and behavioral challenges for their clients. With 18 years of study in Physiology, Neuroscience, and body-focused modalities, Wanda has become a recognized expert in trauma and early developmental attachment issues.. Unlike traditional talk therapy, her approach works directly with the brain and body to change neural wiring, offering a more effective path to healing trauma, early neglect, and abuse. In addition to her therapy practice, she's also an educator and provides trainings for organizations, nonprofits, churches, and schools.

Wanda is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, licensed in the state of California, and received her master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy from Bethel University, San Diego in 2003. She earned her Somatic Experiencing Practioner certification in 2008 from Somatic Experiencing International.
